There are two commonly discussed types of human cloning: therapeutic cloning and reproductive cloning.

Therapeutic cloning (also known as somatic cell transfer, stem cells) = cloning cells from an adult for use in medicine and transplants, and is an active area of research.

Reproductive cloning = making cloned humans for couples wanting to have a child, but cannot naturally.

A third type of cloning called replacement cloning is a theoretical possibility, and would be a combination of both. Replacement cloning would entail the replacement of an extensively damaged, failed, or failing body through cloning followed by whole or partial brain transplant or harvesting the internal organs of the clone.

In summary:
1. Medical advances in understanding cancer, heart disease and miscarriages as a benefit of studying cell differentiation at the same time that cloning is studied and developed. 2. Supply of organs i.e. kidneys and bone marrows. 3. Cosmetic surgery. 4. Solve infertility. 5. Genetic engineering/designer babies. 6. Easy to make identical twin children. 7. Scientific breakthroughs in getting closer to immortality. 8. Perfect the technology for cloning animals. 9. Clone Armies


Medical breakthroughs - Many people have suffered accidental medical tragedies during their lifetimes, i.e. a girl who needs a kidney, a burn victim, a girl born with cosmetic deformities, a man who needs a liver, a woman who is infertile because of cancer, and a father who lost his only son etc. etc.

Human cloning technology is expected to result in several miraculous medical breakthroughs. How will this happen?

1. Renew activity of damaged cells by growing new cells and replacing them. Scientists believe that they may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged.

2. Embryonic stem cells can be grown to produce organs or tissues to repair or replace damaged ones. Skin for burn victims, brain cells for the brain damaged, spinal cord cells for quadriplegics and paraplegics, hearts, lungs, livers, and kidneys could be produced. By combining this technology with human cloning technology it may be possible to produce needed tissue for suffering people that will be free of rejection by their immune systems. Conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart failure, degenerative joint disease, and other problems may be made curable if human cloning and its technology are not banned.

3. Cloning experiments may add to the understanding of genetics and lead to the creation of animal organs that an be easily accepted by humans. This would supply limitless organs to those in need. Furthermore, cloned human beings may be harvested for their organs. We may be able to clone livers for liver transplants and kidneys for kidney failure. Same shit when cloning the bone marrow for children and adults suffering from leukemia. This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology.

4. We may be able to cure cancer if cloning leads to a better understanding of cell differentiation. The growth of the human morula is similar to the growth at which cancer cells propagate. If information derived from cloning research allows scientists to stop the division of the human ovum, a technique for terminating cancer may be found.

6. Cloning might produce a greater understanding of the cause of miscarriages, which might lead to a treatment to prevent spontaneous abortions. This would help women who can't bring a fetus to term. It might lead to an understanding of the way a morula (mass of cells developed from a blastula) attaches itself to the uterine wall. This might generate new and successful contraceptives.

Cosmetic applications (Plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery.) - Because of human cloning and its technology the days of silicone breast implants and other cosmetic procedures that may cause immune disease should soon be over. With the new technology, instead of using materials foreign to the body for such procedures, doctors will be able to manufacture bone, fat, connective tissue, or cartilage that matches the patients tissues exactly. Anyone will able to have their appearance altered to their satisfaction without the leaking of silicone gel into their bodies or the other problems that occur with present day plastic surgery. Victims of terrible accidents that deform the face or people born with a deformed face should now be able to have their features repaired with new, safer, technology. Limbs for amputees may be able to be regenerated. Oh and a cure for baldness...

To solve infertility - Being infertile is often not considered a "real medical problem" so insurance companies and governments can be and are not sympathetic. The current options for infertile couples are painful and expensive while cloning has the potential to change the world for infertile couples almost overnight. (not sure if that's true, shouldn't it be expensive to clone?)
Human cloning could allow two gay men to take 23 chromosomes from each male and put them into a single egg to truly have a baby of their own. also two gay women could use this technology to conceive a child of their own using their individual 23 chromosomes.


Solve problem of bad genes/make designer babies - Interestingly, human cloning allows you the opportunity to participate in choosing the parents and thus, genes for your clone. Cloning technology can also be used to test for and perhaps cure genetic diseases. This may mean making children live longer, helping them to be resistant to cancer, heart disease, any familial diseases, and all the other problems that can be cured using what we learn from human cloning technology. Nobody needs to live with genetic, hereditary diseases i.e. cystic fibrosis (mucus in the lungs making you die before 30), hemophilia (can't heal wounds), diabetes etc.

Human cloning can also improve the parent-child relationship since you would have a head start on the needs and talents of your child. A head start on understanding the genetic component of a cloned child will make children easily able to meet the expectations of parents and make everyone happier i.e. handsome, smart, musically/athletically gifted. This does not mean a clone would be a carbon copy with no individuality since our talents and desires are genetic, developmental, and environmental.

Furthermore, The average person carries 8 defective genes inside them and these defective genes allow people to become sick when they would otherwise remain healthy. With human cloning and its technology it may be possible to ensure that we no longer suffer because of our defective genes.

With human cloning you could give a couple in the future both a child from your DNA/good genes and the financial assets from your lifetime to start out financially secure instead of struggling as most couples do now.

Economy - cheaper medicine = less burden on welfare system because of more healthy people. Although inequality in the world will worsen and if cloning's actually expensive and it's just the few rich people who'll get to benefit. The divide between the rich and the poor will also be greater. Hence, worse birth lottery since:

1. Rich people will all be healthy so pharmaceutical companies won't really care anymore since poor people can't pay for their medicine anyway. Being poor will suck even more now.
2. Every parent who has enough money will pay to design babies who will be beautiful/handsome, healthy and smart. Then the designed people are the ones likely to succeed and get rich. Not the case for poor people who can't design babies.


You want your clone to lead the life that was meant to be yours - The Human Cloning Foundation has been surprised by the number of people that write to say that they would like to have a clone so that it may lead the life that was meant to be theirs. Typically, these are people who have suffered some terrible physical or mental handicap and feel robbed of the opportunities they should have had in life. Some see this life as a sacrifice so that the life of their clone may be enriched.

People whose lives have been destroyed or have not been able to reproduce in this lifetime due to tragedy could arrange to have their DNA continued and fund research at the same time. For example: A boy graduates from high school at age 18 then breaks his neck at a pool party. He gets his first urinary tract infection because of an indwelling urinary catheter and continues to suffer from them the rest of his life. At age 40 after hearing about Dolly being a clone, he changes his will and has his DNA stored for future human cloning. His future mother will be awarded one million dollars to have him and raise him. His DNA clone will inherit a trust fund. He leaves five million to spinal cord research. He dies feeling that although he was robbed of normal life, his twin/clone will lead a better life.

To take a step towards immortality - Human cloning essentially means taking a human being's DNA and reversing its age back to zero. Dr. Richard Seed, one of cloning's leading proponents, hopes that cloning will help us understand how to reverse DNA back to age 20 or whatever age we want to be.

Endangered species could be saved - Through the research leading up to human cloning we will perfect the technology to clone animals, and thus we could forever preserve endangered species, including human beings.

Animals and plants could be cloned for medical purposes - Through the research leading up to human cloning, we should discover how to clone animals and plants to produce life-saving medications.

To have a better sense of identity - If we had some information about ourselves, perhaps we could sooner or better discovery who we are. A clone would have access to a tremendous amount of information about his or her parent that could greatly help in understanding one's psyche and physical attributes. All of this information could provide a better sense of identity.
